University of Utah Claims Number One Startup Position

The University of Utah said Monday that it is now ranked number one, in terms of the number of startup companies spun out of the school in 2009. According to the University, citing numbers from the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM), it had 19 companies created based on university research in 2009, versus 18 companies each at MIT and the California Institute of Technology. The U of U said in total, the 181 institutions surveyed by the AUTM created 596 startup companies in 2009, or an average of four per school. Last year, the University tied with MIT.
