Golden Helix Adopts GPUs For Genetic Analysis

Bozeman, Montana-based Golden Helix, a developer of genetic analysis software, said today that it has adopted the use of GPUS--graphical processing units--to accelerate its software. The firm said that it has enabled its SNP and Variation Suite software to run on off-the-shelf, graphics processing cards, which reduces the time to run operations from hours and days to a fraction of the time. The firm said the next version of its software--due in November--will include the GPU capability. GPU cards have been being applied by companies to implement massively parallel computations, which use the specialized hardware processors in those cards to accelerate computationally intensive operations. Golden Helix develops software used for analyzing, visualizing, and managing genetic sequencing data.
