Me.dium, developers of a browser toolbar that helps Internet users scan their social networks, revealed Thursday that it has launched a "crowd-powered" search engine. The Boulder, Colo.-based business explained that its Social Search application combines proprietary technology with a Yahoo! product to produce a search utility that determines relevance according to what people are looking for at that moment. Specifically, Me.dium said Social Search leverages Yahoo!’s open Search BOSS (Build Your Own Search Service) platform. Me.dium said the advantage to its tool is it lets people determine search result relevance rather than programmed Web crawlers. Me.dium added that Social Search is intended to complement its flagship Social Toolbar, which the company said has been downloaded by more than 2 million people.
