Boulder, Colorado-based LeftHand Networks said earlier this week that it has shipped a new virtual appliance for the VMware ESX Server virtualization environment. The new software, which is a packaged version of LeftHand's storage software, allows its customers to deploy LeftHand's software through a virtual appliance. Virtual appliances are pre-packaged and pre-configured operating system images which run through system virtualization software like VMware; that virtualization software allows multiple computer operating system images to run in a single server. Virtualization is being adopted by enterprises to consolidate the number of servers they are running in their data centers. According to LeftHand, the new Virtual SAN Appliance (VSA) for VMware ESX Server is available through its distributors Alternative Technology and Avnet Technology Solutions.
