Uber Settles With Tempe Victim's Family
Uber has settled with the family of Elaine Herzberg, the woman hit and killed by an Uber self-driving vehicle in Tempe earlier this month, according to Reuters. Details of that settlement were not announced. Uber has come under fire by other makers of autonomous vehicle technology--including Intel>--for not detecting Herzberg earlier, and has been suspended from testing in Arizona as a result of the incident. Although self-driving car technology is expected to make driving safer--especially as the technology progresses--the incident is a reminder of the hazards of developing technology. The CEO of Intel's MobileEye unit, Amnon Shashua, summed it up, saying further incidents like the one with Uber "do further harm to already fragile consumer trust and spur reactive regulation" which could stifle future autonomous vehicle development.
