sPower is behind a giant solar power purchase from software giant
Microsoft Corp., which said last week that it is purchasing
315 MW of energy in Virginia, the single largest corporate purchase of solar energy, ever, in the United States. Microsoft said the purchase is part of an effort to grow its solar power portfolio, bringing it now to a total of approximately 1.2 gigawatts. The new solar power projects in Virginia, the Pleinmont I and II solar power projects, are being built and will be owned and operated by sPower. sPower is a developer of utility-scale, solar power plans, and is owned by AES Corporation and the Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo). AES and AIMCo
acquired sPower in August, in a deal worth $1.6 billion.
