EMCORE Corp., a semiconductor manufacturer for the communications and solar energy industries, announced Tuesday that it has agreed to pay $85 million for the telecommunications portion of silicon heavyweight Intel Corp.'s Optical Platform Division. EMCORE said the transaction includes intellectual property, assets and technology related to tunable lasers, tunable transponders, 300-pin transponders and tunable laser assemblies. With the acquisition, which is expected to close in Q1 2008, EMCORE said it gains a stronger presence in the telecommunications market and an enlarged fiber optics product portfolio. Intel Corp. is based in Santa Clara, Calif. EMCORE Corp. is headquartered in Albuquerque, N.M.
