Gogo Plans To Tap 5G Network For Inflight Connectivity

Gogo, the in-flight broadband connectivity provider which operates its business aviation unit out of Broomfield, Colorado, said on Wednesday that it plans to build a new, 5G network specifically to support its business aviation aircraft, commercial regional jets, and smaller, mainline jets. Gogo said it expects to launch that new air-to-ground network in 2021. According to the company, the network will operate within the contiguous United States and Canada. Gogo said that it plans to use unlicensed spectrum in the 2.4Ghz range for its 5G network, and tap into an existing network of more than 250 towers. 5G wireless is a new broadband acces scheme being adopted by telecom carriers, which uses a variety of different frequency spectrum but provides much faster operating speeds. Gogo said it plans to continue to use its existing, 3G and 4G networks to support its service as backup.
