Aereo Officially Shuts Down Service
Aereo, the service which had been looking to give consumers access to time shifted, broadcast television--including in both Utah and Colorado--has officially shut down its service nationwide, as a result of a United States Supreme Court ruling. Aereo said it has "decided to pause" its operations "temporarily" as its consults with the court. The company called the ruling a "massive setback to consumers". Aereo already had shut down its operations in both Utah and Colorado in February, in a related lawsuit. Aereo, which is backed by Barry Diller, had been using antennas to receive televisions broadcasts, and then had offered those same broadcasts for viewing via the Internet in a number of markets. The company had launched in Denver in January of 2013 and in Utah in July of 2013.
