Myriad Genetics At Center Of Supreme Court's Genetics Patent Debate
Salt Lake City-based molecular diagnostics firm Myriad Genetics is at the center of a case being considered at the Supreme Court this week: can the human gene be patented? The Supreme Court is weighing a challenge to a patent award to Myriad, covering the ability to isolate human genes indicating a predisposition to breast and ovarian cancer. The issue extends well beyond Myriad to the widespread practice of patenting genes.
