Firm Plans Giant Solar Power Project In Colorado
A North Carolina firm, Cogentrix Energy, said today that it is in a deal with the Public Service Company of Colorado (PSCo), an Xcel Energy company, to build what it expects will be the largest concentrating photovoltaic solar power generation facility in the world. According to Cogentrix, it is building a 30,000 kilowatt solar generating project--the largest facility of its type in the world--near Alamosa, Colorado. The project is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2012. Cogentrix said the new project is built on 225 acres of land in the San Luis Valley of Colorado, and will supply enough energy to provide 6,500 homes with power. Cogentrix said the San Luis Valley is one of the best locations for solar energy production in the United States.
