Sun Number, which develops a service to help realistically calculate the amount of energy and effectiveness of potential solar power installations for rooftops, has scored $1M from the U.S. Department of Energy, the company said this week. According to Sun Number, the new funding comes as part of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) SunShot Initiative Incubator Program. The new funding will go to expand geographic coverage of the company's service. Sun Number is using geographical information systems (GIS) data to figure out things like terrain, rooftop characteristics, sunlight profile, and much more to help calculate the solar potential of a rooftop. The company says its technology vastly reduces the cost of qualifying a property for solar contractors.
