Venture Firms Pour $262.3M In Region In Q3

The latest venture capital numbers from the PricewaterhouseCoopers/National Venture Capital Association MoneyTree report, based on data from Thomson Reuters, find that the region had just over a quarter billion dollars invested in venture capital in Q3 of 2011. According to the MoneyTree report, the region saw a total of $262.3M invested in companies by venture capitalists, with Colorado reporting 24 investments totaling $157.6M, Utah with $42.0M in investments across 6 deals, New Mexico pulling in $42.0M in venture capital in 3 deals, and Arizona with $6.7M across 4 companies. The total was a growth from Q3 of 2010, when a total of $162.1M was invested in the area.

The state with the biggest gain was New Mexico, which grew from only $4.29M in investments in Q3 of 2010 to the $42.0M in Q3 of 2011, and not a single venture capital investment last quarter, in Q2 of 2011. Utah's investments were about the same, compared with Q3 of last year, when the state had 9 investments totaling $53.4M.

Totals for the region were actually down significantly from Q2 of this year, when $464.2M was invested in the region; the drop was mostly due to a lack of activity in Arizona, which went from a whopping $162.7M invested in Q2 of 2011 to only $6.7M in Q3. Also, venture deals in Idaho and Montana in Q2 boosted last quarter's totals; neither state reported any venture deals in Q3. Nationally, venture capital was down 12 percent in terms of dollars, and 14 percent in terms of deals, dropping to $6.96 billion across 876 deals, compared with Q2, when $7.9 billion was invested in 1,015 deals.
