Tandberg Data announced Thursday that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the RDX business from
Prostor Systems. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. According to Tandberg Data, it will acquire the intellectual property and key members of ProStor's RDX engineering team. ProStor developed the removable disk technology in 2006, and had been licensing the format to various OEMs. The firms said that ProStor will shift its focus to development, marketing, and sales of its InfiniVault product--the firm's system level archive products, which use RDX disk cartridges instead of tape. The sale of RDX is a very significant shift for ProStor, which was founded around the development of using its RDX format to replace tape cartidges, and its licensing of that technology to others. ProStor is headed by Frank Harbist, who previously headed HP's tape and archive division.
