Interview with Marcus Filipovich, Ocular Data Systems

Last week, Pasadena-based Ocular Data Systems ( announced a funding round from the Pasadena Angels, for its camera-based systems used by law enforcement to capture evidence in drunk or drugged driving cases. We talked with CEO Marcus Filipovich to learn more about the company and its product.

StartEngine Used To Crowdfund Alt-Right Social Network
Los Angeles-based StartEngine is being used to help fund an alt-right, social network called GAB, started by Andrew Torba, an outspoken Trump supporter who was kicked out of Y-Combinator for harassing other YC founders, according to a report on Thursday. StartEngine's website says that the network--which has adopted a logo eerily reminiscent of "Pepe the Frog", which according to the Anti-Defamation League and others has been adopted as a symbol of hate--has raised more than $1M from over 1,425 (More info...)

Loot Crate Rolls Out Call of Duty: WWII Crate
Los Angeles-based Loot Crate, the subscription, gift box service run by Chris Davis, said on Thursday that it has partnered up with Santa Monica-based Activision to offer up a special, limited edition crate focused on the new Call of Duty: WWII title being released in November. According to Loot Crate, the "mystery crate" will feature exclusive Call of Duty: WWII themed items, including apparel, gear, and other items. Activision is releasing its new title on November 3rd. Kingston Digital Adds Smaller, Encrypted USB Drives
Bigger is not better--apparently--when it comes to encrypted, USB flash drives. Fountain Valley-based Kingston Digital, the flash memory arm of Kingston, said this week that it has rolled out new, smaller encrypted USB drives--specifically aimed at helping companies limit the amount of data which can be transported outside of a company's network. The company--which already offers up 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models of its encrypted flash memory--said it specifically added lower 4GB and 8GB capacities (More info...)

Materia Faces Legal Challenge From German Company
Pasadena-based material science technology developer Materia appears to be facing some legal challenges in court, according to Law360. The report says that a German industrial conglomerate, Evonik Degussa GmbH, says it received a $1.5M patent infringement verdict over a chemical bond component Materia makes in January, and claims that Materia is still offering those infringing products for sale on its website. The report said the complaint was received in the Delaware federal court on Wednesday.
